Alaska salmon harvest to increase

The Alaska Department of Fish & Game expects this year's salmon catch to total 174.8 million fish, up 28.7 million from 2008's 146.1-million-fish catch.
The 2008 salmon harvest was 13.6 million more fish than the 132.5 million preseason forecast, making it the 16th largest salmon harvest since 1960.
The 2009 catch is predicted to be comprised of 249,000 chinook, 38.1 million sockeye, 4.6 million coho, 113.1 million pink and 18.5 million chum.
Chinook and sockeye catches are predicted to decrease from 2008, down from 344,000 and 39.1 million fish, respectively. The decrease in sockeye production is primarily a result of the projected fall Bristol Bay landings.
Chum, coho and pink landings are all predicted to increase from 18.2 million, 4.4 million and 84 million, respectively, last year.
