EU Food-Safety Inspectors to Visit China

July 24, 2008 - The European Union's top health official says a team of food-safety inspectors will visit China in October due to the increased presence of unsanitary seafood imports from the Asian country, the Associated Press reported yesterday.

The EU found 355 problematic seafood imports from China last year, or 12 percent of all unsanitary food products imported into the 27-nation community.

European Union Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou says that while the quality of food imports from China has improved considerably, "We have a very long way to go."

She asked EU nations to strengthen controls of food imports.
