Scottish, Irish Farmers Dispute EU Decision to Abolish Salmon MIP

Scotland on Sunday
June 1, 2008 - THOUSANDS of Scottish fish farming and processing jobs are at risk after a Brussels decision to ditch rules barring cut-price Norwegian salmon, the industry warned last night.

The European Union is scrapping laws which limited the amount of cheap farmed salmon that the Norwegians could sell into the EU.

Lobbying by the British and Irish governments to retain the rules failed as Norwegian producers won their battle to abolish the minimum import price of GBP 2.20 a kilo. Scottish and Irish producers are warning that they will appeal the decision at the European Court.
