Boar fish may be a little known species in global terms, but it is one for which the Irish Sea Fisheries Board (BIM) has great hopes. The first priority is to develop a consumer market for the species, all of which are currently sold for fishmeal and fish oil production.

Fisheries should be managed so that they are profitable, otherwise fishermen won’t go out to fish. And fishing for maximum sustainable yield, which is a main criterion of the EU’s revised Common Fisheries Policy, is not the best way to achieve this objective.
