When The Who sang about “goin' mobile” back in the 60’s, I think they were talking about a groovy van, man. These days, “goin mobile” is all about the mobile phone and the laptop - and it’s definitely where we’re headed.
A Pew internet report entitled Mobile Access 2010 found that last year, nearly half of all adults (47%) went online with a laptop using a Wi-Fi connection or mobile broadband card (up from the 39% as of April 2009) while 40% of adults used the internet, email or instant messaging on a mobile phone (up from the 32% in 2009). That equals 59% of adults accessing the internet wirelessly via a laptop or mobile phone, an increase from 51% in April of 2009.
Those numbers are going to continue to rise.
We’ve seen a number of seafood-focused apps debut over the last couple of months. Seafood Watch’s Project FishMap lets you share the locations of restaurants and markets where you’ve found sustainable seafood. Mitch Tonks has launched Eat Fish, an app that promises comprehensive fish knowledge such as seasonality, flavor profiles, how-to videos, recipes and more.
Beyond apps, you’re going to want to make sure your marketing materials are accessible via mobile phone or increasingly smaller laptops. Review your web pages, email newsletters and other promotional materials - how do they look on your phone?
Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites are popular among mobile users. Are you taking advantage of this opportunity to promote your company or your brand no matter where your customers are? Still think Facebook is something your kids are doing instead of homework? Think again! One in every 13 people on the planet is using Facebook and some of them could be searching for a seafood restaurant, a lobster wholesaler or a refrigeration company right now!
More than half your customers are out there looking for information on their phones and laptops. Apps, active social media accounts and mobile-optimized websites and other marketing materials are something all your customers will appreciate, especially those air-conditioned gypsies!
