P.E.I. International Shellfish Festival

How many lobstermen does it take to carry a lobster roll measuring nearly 23 meters in length?

Around 32 – with a police escort – as members of the Prince Edward Island Fisherman’s Association and other volunteers proved on 20 September, when a small army hoisted the behemoth sandwich into the main tent of the P.E.I. International Shellfish Festival.

It was the hope of the P.E.I. fishermen and chefs that their super-sized seafood sub – which measures in at aprroximately 79 feet and one inch – would be mammoth enough to clinch the Guinness Book of World Records' distinction for the largest lobster roll, a title currently held by Shediac, New Brunswick for an epic rendition of the classic sandwich that topped out at 72 feet and four inches.

Initially, the P.E.I. crew set out to bake a 30-meter long sandwich, but a shortage of bread prevented them from getting that far. However, the resulting roll still managed to cram close to 57 kilograms of filling, reported CBC News. Lobster meat accounted for roughly 34 kilograms of the sandwich’s weight, while mayonnaise and vegetables were responsible for about 11 kilograms a piece. The sandwich required 68 kilograms of dough and took nearly 60 hours to bake, according to The Guardian.

Charlottetown chef Ross Munro, Food Network Canada chef Lynn Crawford and Indiana chef Matt Nolot were the culinary masterminds behind the massive roll. Over 300 portions of the lobster roll were served to the attendees of the P.E.I. International Shellfish Festival on Sunday. Follow CBC News video-journalist Jessica Doria-Brown on Twitter, @JDoriaBrownCBC, for photos and videos of the lobster roll.

Update: Representatives from Shediak came forward to CBC News on 21 September claiming that the lobster roll world record remains with their maritime community – according to Michel Boudreau, the president of the Shediac Lobster Festival, this year the Shediak community composed a lobster roll measuring 85 feet, 6 inches in length (26 meters) during their 25th annual celebratory event.
