Americans certainly need healthier options like seafood – especially on Super Bowl Sunday.  It is one of the days of the years when they eat primarily junk food, including 28 million pounds of potato chips and more than 4.4 million pizzas.

Consumer Reports recently named SeaPak’s Jumbo Butterfly Shrimp as one of its top healthy appetizers for parties held during Super Bowl LI on 5 February. The shrimp contains 220 calories per serving (four shrimp) and 70 mg. of cholesterol.

And supermarket chains across the United States are touting seafood as a health choice for Super Bowl get-togethers. Recognizing that many New Englanders are hosting friends and family for Super Bowl, Wellesley, Massachusetts-based Roche Bros. is touting seafood items that are already cooked. For example, its cups of New England clam chowder and lobster bisque are USD 1 (EUR 0.93) off its regular price.

Likewise, Star Market, a subsidiary of Shaw’s in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, is offering “buy one, get one free” on its seafood salad or seafood stuffing. The chain is also offering several fresh fish and shellfish specials, including peeled and deveined jumbo raw shrimp for USD 10.99 (EUR 10.22) a pound, five-ounce salmon portions for USD 4.99 (EUR 4.64) each and Captain’s Cut cod loins for USD 10.99 (EUR 10.22) per pound.

And, for those attending the Super Bowl in person in Houston, Texas, seafood-focused restaurants are trying to attract new diners. Landry’s Seafood just opened George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Peska, a Mexican-inspired seafood restaurant in Houston, is offering Happy Hour all day, from 3 February through 5 February. Guests can dine on house specialties such as soft-shell crab taco and red snapper filet.
