Loblaws removes at-risk seafood species

Marine Stewardship Council-certified sockeye salmon, Pacific cod, Pacific halibut and Atlantic haddock are now available at the fresh seafood counters of select Loblaws stores in the Toronto area, the Canadian retailers announced on Monday.

Loblaw Cos. Ltd. has been steadily increasing the number of MSC-certified products it offers since May 2009, when it pledged to source only sustainable seafood by 2013. Last May, the company declared that it’s “on track” to meet its goal and that it carries 16 MSC-certified products, more than any other Canadian retailer.

“We know that Loblaw customers will feel just as good as we do that sustainable seafood is now available from our fresh seafood counters,” said Paul Uys, Loblaw’s VP of sustainable seafood. “Despite this exciting progress, there is a lot more work to be done — on our own and with others — to accelerate the pace at which we can make available more MSC-certified products in coming months.”

To complement the new MSC-certified products, Loblaw will be hosting sustainable seafood cooking classes at seven Toronto-areas stores the week of 19 June.

A subsidiary of George Weston Ltd., Loblaw operates more than 1,000 stores across Canada.
