ASC hits milestones on tonnage and farm totals

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) reached two major milestones this month as it surpassed 300 farms in its certification program and more than one million tonnes of seafood bearing its certification entering the market.

Founded in 2010 by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and IDH (Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative), the ASC is a nonprofit that has developed standards for responsibly farming seafood. The group runs a certification and labeling program for aquaculture facilities and their products based off its standards.

“We're thrilled – and we are even happier that this is happening right before the Rio 2016 Games where ASC seafood will have a major presence,” ASC Senior Communication Manager Contessa Kellogg-Winters said.

The ASC has certified farms located in 31 countries, according to data supplied by the organization. Norway leads the way with 79 certified farms, all producing salmon. Vietnam is second with 67 farms, the majority producing pangasius and shrimp. Chile is third with 34 salmon farms and three bivalve farms for a total of 47 certified farms.

Norway also leads in ASC-certified production volume, with 398,400 tonnes of salmon certified annually. Vietnam is second with 250,934 tonnes of seafood certified annually, and Chile is third with 137,344 tonnes.
