Canadian caviar producer vies to save 16,000 sturgeon from being euthanized

Canada-based Acadian Sturgeon and Caviar Inc. is rallying to save 16,000 sturgeon from being euthanized after the company raising them, also located in Canada, filed for bankruptcy.

Acadian Sturgeon, which has been in the sturgeon-raising and caviar business for 11 years, is hoping to acquire the shortnose fish stock soon to be left behind by a bankrupt business in Charlo, New Brunswick, enlisting the help of crowdfunding service Kickstarter to raise the finances necessary to accommodate the fish.

If the company can amass the proper funds – it’s hoping to raise CAD 50,000 (USD 37,473) – it will be able to introduce two more varieties of caviar from shortnose sturgeon to its portfolio: Acadian Gold and Acadian Green.

On the Kickstarter page, Acadian Sturgeon discussed the mechanics of what may have gone wrong with the business model employed by its struggling rival.

“The biggest problem with this business is that they grew too fast and too large and they have not built the right quality for the caviar and a market, plus they did some technological errors that we know how to fix," the company said.

The company also explained its agenda for the next steps forward if it is able to acquire the fish.

“We already did a lots of tests and due diligence for producing and improving the quality of those new types of caviar. Our plan goes from changing the feed into a more appropriate, quality and quantity of food, to changes in the water distribution system (flow-through instead of recirculation), cleaning and refining the technology, transferring fish before harvest to our existing operation in Carters Point etc.,” according to the Kickstarter page.

While the Kickstarter page does not name the previous owner of the sturgeon stock, Breviro Caviar, located in the northern community of Charlo, has recently experienced financial trouble, according to CBC News.
