Dutch retailers commit to ASC-certified fish

The Dutch Retail Association (CBL) on Wednesday said it is committed to, by 2016, offer in its supermarkets only farmed fish certified according to Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), or equivalent, standards.

The association made a similar pledge with wild seafood, and now about 85 percent of its members’ wild seafood offerings are certified according to Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), or equivalent, standards.

“It is a compliment that seafood suppliers and the fishing industry have created a large efforts toward MSC certification in relatively short term of three years,” said Marc Jansen, director of consumer affairs and quality for the CBL. “We now ask the global aquaculture sector to get started with the same ambitious speed.”

CBL members include Albert Heijin, Laurua, C1000 and Wholesale Super Unie and operate about 4,500 stores.
