More 4-star BAP certified tilapia on its way to the US market

More four-star tilapia certified by the Global Aquaculture Alliance’s Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) program will soon be available to U.S. consumers now that The Fishin’ Company has successfully completed all phases of the BAP audit process for its tilapia operations in China.

A number of retail outlets across the United States will receive the certified tilapia imports, according to the Seattle-based supplier. To have its tilapia achieve four-star status, The Fishin’ Company had to assure that its product originated from BAP-certified processing plants, farms, hatcheries and feed mills. After earning BAP certification for two hatcheries and one feed mill in China late in 2015, the supplier became eligible for the four-star distinction – the highest designation under the BAP program.

The fish will serve to boost the availability of four-star BAP tilapia from China, a type of product that The Fishin’ Company’s CEO Manish Kumar hopes to make into an industry norm.

“This is a groundbreaking day for tilapia. We are ecstatic to be able to deliver this totally comprehensive benchmark of food safety, traceability and sustainability to the retail arena, and applaud our supply chain for their partnership in this endeavor,” said Kumar in a prepared statement. “Now that four-star BAP tilapia is a reality for the industry, we must all strive to make it the norm, not the exception. This journey is just beginning, and we will continue to work passionately with the GAA to bring this goal to fruition.”

The Fishin' Company announced it would seek four-star BAP accredidation in January 2016.

“Four-star BAP certification is the highest level available and not paralleled by any other aquaculture certification program. To achieve four-star BAP is a demonstration of true commitment to making a difference, real change on the water. We applaud the efforts of The Fishin’ Company on this breakthrough for tilapia producers and look forward to seeing four-star BAP tilapia in stores across the country,” added Peter Redmond, GAA’s Vice President of Market Development.

The Fishin’ Company joins Paraiso Springs Aquaculture Guatemala in offering four-star BAP-certified tilapia.
