New aquaculture research center could be coming to the UK

A new lobster hatchery and aquaculture research center is in the works for the town of Amble in Northumberland, England.

Amble’s development trust hopes to add the hatchery and research center as a means to boost tourism offerings within the town’s up-and-coming Habour Village, reported the Northumberland Gazette. What’s more, the hatchery would serve to increase Amble’s sustainability aims and enhance its growing shellfish fishery. According to Julia Aston, a member of the development trust, the hatchery is necessary to assure that stock is sufficient enough to aid in recuperation, she told the Gazette.

“We have had two staged feasibility studies done for the lobster hatchery and we are writing up a business plan that will accompany any funding application that we submit,” Aston elaborated for the Gazette. “We are waiting for the next round of funding from the European Fisheries Fund to open. It is at an early stage, but it would be a boost to both local tourism and our fisheries.”

The development trust intends to join forces with the Newcastle University and Northumberland Inshore Fisheries & Conservation Authority to explore what is needed to spur the advancement of the lobster fishery in Amble by way of harvesting. If the plan for the center and hatchery is approved, students from the aforementioned institutions would be permitted to work in the aquaculture center at the Seafood Center of Amble’s Harbour Village.
