Oyster aquaculture trial begins in Australia

Oyster lovers will be pleased to know scientists at West Beach are cultivating the native flat oyster in the hope of spawning a new aquaculture industry.

The native oyster can command twice the price of the introduced Pacific oyster, which is the type commonly grown on oyster leases along the South Australian coastline.

Marine Innovation Southern Australia is running a trial at SARDI Aquatic Sciences, West Beach, to address hatchery issues and growing techniques.

Professor Xiaoxu Li said native oyster farming could become another major aquaculture sector within 10 years.

"This year's embryo survival rates have greatly improved, and we now aim to evaluate native oyster performance across a greater range of environmental conditions in South Australia," he said.
