Scotland’s salmon exports continue to fall

Scottish farmed salmon exports dropped by more than 20 percent or around GBP 100 million (EUR 131.7 million; USD 142.5 million) in 2015, according to provisional figures from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) covering the first 11 months of the year.

Exports for January through November totaled GBP 353 million (EUR 464.9 million; USD 503.1 million), compared with GBP 457 million (EUR 601.8 million; USD 651.3 million) in the same period of 2014.

Compared with the previous year, sales to the United States, Canada and the Far East were down by almost one-third, while there was a slight increase in volumes sold to Europe.

In the past year, Scotland’s salmon industry has been challenged by a higher currency value than its main competitors as well as the Russian trade embargo, which has led to an oversupply of salmon in world markets.
