Trout, salmon egg producers partner up

Two major egg producers in the United States and the U.K. are teaming up to increase their share of the aquaculture markets.

Landcatch, a Scottish Atlantic salmon egg and smolt supplier based in Ormsary, U.K., has signed a memorandum of understanding with Troutlodge, the world’s largest rainbow trout egg producer, based in Seattle, Wash., U.S.

The memorandum, described as a joint venture, calls for Landcatch to become a 45 percent shareholder in Troutlodge. It also allows Troutlodge’s existing Chilean egg production facilities to expand to add a new Atlantic salmon breeding program, along with enhanced trout and coho salmon programs. The partnership also includes a support agreement guaranteeing that Landcatch will support Troutlodge breeding programs.

“This is a very exciting investment which will see Troutlodge and us make a further significant impact in world aquaculture,” said Neil Manchester, managing director at Landcatch. “It increases our sustainability by working with such a credible partner; it allows us to become re-established in Atlantic salmon egg production in Chile and it enables us to pursue a significant expansion strategy with the aim of becoming one of the main global players in salmon and trout.”
