Ahold USA supermarket retail counters only offering sustainably sourced fresh seafood

Ahold USA announced it will only sell sustainably- and responsibly -sourced seafood at all of its supermarket retail counters.

The company created its own standard that factors in certifications such as Marine Stewardship Council, Aquaculture Stewardship Council and Best Aquaculture Practices certifications. In addition, the company’s own seafood brands, Nature’s Promise and Own Brand, are sustainably sourced.

“Sustainable seafood is the right consumer choice and is also better for the health of the aquatic ecosystems that produce it,” said Marissa Nelson, Ahold USA’s senior vice president of responsible retailing and healthy living. “We work with seafood suppliers who share our same values of respect for the environment and responsible product sourcing. By supporting these environmentally responsible fisheries and fish farms, our division stores provide high quality seafood that is not only good for our customers, but ensure the same quality seafood will be available for years to come.”

In addition, the company has launched an employee training program to teach its retail associates about the origin and fishery health of each of the species sold in Ahold’s supermarkets with the goal of improving their knowledge of the company’s responsible sourcing and sustainability practices. The company stocks more than 200 seafood products in total.

Ahold USA’s stores include supermarkets in the Stop & Shop New England, Stop & Shop New York Metro, Giant Landover and Giant Carlisle chains.
