Alaska fisheries get RFM audit, assessment

One Alaska fishery is being audited for ongoing certification under the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) program, while another fishery is entering assessment to get RFM certified, according to the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI).

According to ASMI, the Alaska Pollock fishery has entered into the second annual RFM audit. The fishery first got certification under the program in December 2011. It passed its first annual audit, which finished in February 2013. Meanwhile, the Alaska flatfish fishery is currently under assessment for RFM certification, according to ASMI.

The RFM program is based on standards set by the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). ASMI and the Alaska seafood industry are outspoken opponents of certification programs from nonprofit organizations such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), and have promoted the RFM program as an alternative to the MSC's certification program.
