Alaska seafood processor hit with fine over discharge

Alaska seafood processor Silver Bay Seafoods has settled with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) over violations of Alaska conservation laws.

Silver Bay has agreed to pay USD 75,000 (EUR 66,320) in civil penalties connected to violations of Alaska’s pollutant discharge elimination system requirements at the company’s Valdez facility. The violations came from a 600-foot underwater outfall pipe being damaged by a vessel anchor. The company’s repaired line was discharging at the wrong depth.

“In 2014, the company replaced the line, without DEC approval, which resulted in 2.8 million pounds of seafood waste being discharged in the wrong location,” the department wrote in a statement.
