Early end to shrimp season for one US state

The Louisiana (USA) Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has announced the state’s 2015 spring inshore shrimp season will close on 19 June, marking this season “one of the shortest on record.”

The department said state biologists have discovered a large number of juvenile white shrimp in the inshore waters.

“The decision to close these waters was made to protect these developing shrimp and provide opportunity for growth to larger and more marketable sizes,” the department said when announcing the closure.

The shrimp season typically runs into July. The department’s notice acknowledged, “The spring season for harvest of shrimp in inside waters of the state has been one of the shortest on record.”
