Estonian company nabs FOS approval

Perch, pike-perch and Northern pike fished from Peipsi Lake by Estonian company Katroni Ltd. now come with the Friend of the Sea sustainability (FOS) seal, a branding that the company will bear proudly moving forward, Katroni representatives said.

“We are going to proudly display the Friend of the Sea label on our products as evidence of our commitment to the conservation of fish stocks,” remarked Jevgeni Blinnikov of Katroni.

The fish stocks sought and caught by Katroni have not been overexploited nor have they been overfished. What’s more, because of international agreements between Estonian and the Russian Federation, all catch from Peipsi Lake is strictly monitored; all fishing activities are registered in the Daily Catching Report.

Gillnets and traps licensed by the Estonian Environmental Inspectorate are put to good use by Katroni, and the bycatch as a result is minimal, according to FOS.

FOS is doing its part to assure that no mixing occurs between certified and non-certified origins by instilling its comprehensive traceability system.

Katroni Ltd. was founded in 1996 and concentrated its fishing activity concentrated in Peipsi Lake (Estonia). All perch, pikeperch and Northern pike stokes are fished, processed and distributed to the local market.
