EU fisheries commissioner to hold IUU debate at SEG

Karmenu Vella, European commissioner for the environment, maritime affairs and fisheries, will hold a debate on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, traceability and labeling during Seafood Expo Global 2015 in Brussels.

The debate, scheduled on 21 April from 2:30 to 3:30 at the commission’s stand at booth 1411 in Hall 7, will feature Vella and four other panelists – Steve Trent, executive director of the nonprofit Environmental Justice Foundation, representing his group and also Pew Charitable Trusts, Oceana and the World Wildlife Fund; Peter Andrews, sustainability policy officer from the British Retail Consortium; Guus Pastoor, president of the European Fish Processors Association, and Kim Young-Suk, Vice-Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of the Republic of Korea. The EU has publicly warned the Korean government about not doing enough to stop IUU fishermen based in their country, declaring Korea one of the world’s biggest offenders when it comes to not stopping IUU fishing.

The panel will debate and discuss methods for improving governance of IUU fishing worldwide, and how to improve traceability and other related aspects of the seafood supply chain.
