European Commission to threaten Thailand with import ban over IUU fishing

The European Commission is planning to issue an ultimatum to Thailand tomorrow: Do something to curb Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing or face a seafood import ban.

The commission has announced a press conference at the European Commission headquarters in Brussels, where it would be disclosing “significant action” against three nations. Multiple media outlets are quoting a story from the Associated Press, citing two unnamed sources “with knowledge of the decision” saying the commission will be announcing Tuesday that Thailand will have six months to show it has demonstrated a change in policies to help guard against IUU fishing, or else face a trade ban.

This is not the first time the commission has threatened sanctions or carried them out. The commission has issued bans before, and threatened to do it several times, mostly against smaller nations while accusing Korea of being one of the world’s biggest offenders.
