Irish Group tries to stop Marine Harvest in court

An Irish environmental group is seeking an injunction in an Irish High Court against Marine Harvest to try to stop the salmon farmer from working in a lough in Connemarra.

The group, Friends of the Irish Environment (FIE), alleged that Marine Harvest is draining water there and has installed a pipeline three kilometers long. The group is demanding Marine Harvest stop the work immediately, “and to restore the site to its natural condition.”

Further, FIE argued Marine Harvest is proceeding with its work despite not having permission from the Galway County Council, and that other government bodies have granted licenses without proper procedure.

“Marine Harvest is gaming the system,” FIE Director Tony Lowes said. “We believe they have support from the highest levels and that neither the Council nor Irish (government) will take any action against this multinational, in spite of the threat to public water supplies in the area due to this extraction.”
