New action plan for fisheries control in Lithuania

The European Commission has adopted an action plan with Lithuania to further improve the control of Baltic fisheries for the benefit of the country’s fishermen and to deliver improved sustainability.

Designed jointly with national authorities, the new plan is based on an audit of the Lithuanian fisheries control system, which uncovered inefficiencies in the collection, validation and cross-checking of catch data that could have rendered the calculation of quota uptake unreliable.

Other shortcomings concerned gaps in national legislation, inadequate human resources and double reporting.

The plan will help Lithuania equip itself with the proper administrative set up, IT systems and human resources.

Previous action plans have been adopted with Sweden and Finland. They are regarded as a cooperative way to enforce the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and have obtained positive results in short time.
