NGO gets Taiwan to charge vessel with shark finning

A Taiwanese fishing boat is being escorted back to Taiwan by government patrol boats after an activist group made claims it was illegally collecting shark fins.

Greenpeace said it boarded the Shuen De Ching No. 888 and told Radio New Zealand International that they found a falsified log book, nearly 100 kg of shark fins and other evidence of illegal shark finning.

The activists told the news agency that it contacted authorities immediately, leading to a Taiwanese patrol boat to come to escort the vessel from the northwest Pacific Ocean back to a Taiwan port.

The vessel may face suspension from operations for up to a year, and Greenpeace is calling for more permanent action to stop the vessel from operating.
