Petcurean pet food gets MSC nod

Canadian pet food company Petcurean has received certification from the Marine Stewardship Council for its Gather dog food containing seafood.

Petcurean’s Gather Wild Ocean food contains line-caught cod from Alaska, blended with krill and other non-seafood ingredients. It’s Free Acres food also contains krill.

“We know consumers are increasingly demanding sustainability, transparency and organic ingredients in their pet food, which is why we created GATHER to proactively meet that demand,” Petcurean President Rick van Schagen said. “As a company, we took our time to find the right partners who aligned with our own commitment to responsibility and accountability, and we are delighted that the MSC program exceeds this high standard.”

Van Schagen said Petcurean chose to source from MSC-certified fisheries “for the care and integrity behind their sustainable practices, and the transparency and traceability offered by the MSC program.”

Gather food is sold at stores in Canada, the United States and 18 other countries.

“When it comes to making ocean-friendly choices, pet food isn’t always top of mind for consumers, even though it’s a category that often includes seafood products,” MSC Canada Program Director Jay Lugar said. “By partnering with MSC, Petcurean is giving dog owners the choice to directly support fisheries and fishermen who care about the environment and protecting the stocks they fish for future generations.”
