Safeway halfway to sustainable seafood goal

Safeway this week released its annual report, stating that it is more than halfway to completely its goal of having all if its seafood responsibly caught or farmed by 2015.

The U.S.-based retailer is 51 percent to the goal as of 2013, up from 40 percent the previous year. Safeway works with FishWise to accomplish the goal.

“We take seafood sustainability and safety seriously,” the retailer said in the report. “As one of the country’s largest grocers, Safeway recognizes its responsibility to help protect our oceans in an effort to maintain the availability of seafood for future generations and the health of our planet.”

The company also highlighted its sustainable accomplishments so far this year including ranking No. 2 on Greenpeace’s sustainable seafood list and encouraging federal protection of sensitive coral habitat in Alaska’s Bering Sea Canyons.
