SENA15: ISFA releases new report on global salmon farming industry

The global salmon farming industry creates 121,000 jobs in coastal communities and produces 14.8 billion meals every year, according to a new report released by The International Salmon Farmers Association (ISFA) at the Seafood Expo North America today in Boston.

Today also marks ISFA’s 25th anniversary, and the report is the first ever socio-economic one done on the global salmon farming industry.

The report, called Salmon Farming: Sustaining Communities and Feeding the World, found that global salmon farmers produce 14.8 billion meals a year from only .00008 percent of the world’s oceans. The global salmon farming industry also produces USD 10 million worth of salmon each year and creates 121,000 direct and indirect jobs around the world.

“Salmon farming is one of the most efficient protein producers in the world,” said Trond Davidsen, president of ISFA. “With land and fresh water resources shrinking, the global salmon farming industry represents one of the best ways to feed the world’s growing population with a minimal environmental footprint.”
