This country has its own sustainable aquaculture standard now

The New Zealand government is setting a new standard for aquaculture sustainability, designed to promote and accentuate the value of New Zealand farmed seafood products.

Officials unveiled the program, the A+ Environmental Sustainability Management Framework, at the Aquaculture New Zealand conference this week.

“The A+ program will deliver a set of strong, measurable and progressive Environmental Codes of Practice (ECOPs) sustainability standards that will be independently audited, verified and widely recognized,” said Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy. “This will help our products like salmon, mussels and oysters to stand out in the global market by showing the highest standards of environmental sustainability.”

The ministry’s Sustainable Farming Fund contributed NZD 256,000 (USD 165,060, EUR 144,465) toward the A+ program with co-funding and in-kind contribution of NZD 189,000 (USD 121,861, EUR 106,651) from Aquaculture New Zealand via a growers’ levy.

“This is a great example of industry and government working in partnership to further enhance the value of already high quality New Zealand products,” Guy said.
