Tuna trading company loses International Seafood Sustainability Foundation membership

A lack of compliance with the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation’s (ISSF) conservation measures has led to JFE Shoji Trade America Inc. being removed as an ISSF participant, the foundation announced on 22 May.

When a company joins the ISSF, it must agree to undergo independent audits to establish conformance with science-based benchmarks, which are aimed at improving the long-term health of global tuna fisheries, according to ISSF. An audit of JFE Shoji by MRAG Americas, Inc. resulted in the technical consulting firm determining that the tuna trader was not in compliance with ISSF Conservation Measures. Based on these findings, ISSF terminated JFE Shoji’s membership.

ISSF joins together scientists, the tuna industry and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in a global coalition focused on promoting science-based initiatives for the long-term conservation and sustainable use of tuna stocks, reducing bycatch and promoting ecosystem health.

JFE Shoji Trade America Inc. is a distributor of canned and frozen seafood products, including those under the Geisha Brand, which is owned by Kawasho Foods Corporation.
