Walmart: Alaska RFM program meets sustainable sourcing standards

Walmart executives on Friday announced the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI)-backed Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) program meets the requirements for the retail giant’s sustainable seafood policy.

In 2011, Walmart announced it would only purchase Marine Stewardship Council-certified seafood or seafood certified under equivalent third-party standards. In 2012, a number of Alaska processors dropped the MSC program in favor of the FAO-based RFM chain of custody certification.

David Baskin, Walmart’s VP of meat and seafood, said the company used The Sustainability Consortium (TSC) to develop principles for credible fishery management.

“Based on their findings, we took another look at our policy. We’re pleased to incorporate the latest science by applying TSC’s principles to our sustainable seafood policy,” said Baskin.

“Walmart has proudly sourced seafood from the state of Alaska for many years, and under our newly revised sustainable sourcing policy, we will continue to do so.”

The addition of 14 companies this week brings the number of RFM chain of custody certified firms to more than 80.
