CCF re-launches online seafood calculator

HowMuchFish.com is among the more than 100 recipients of the 2011 Bulldog Awards, which recognize excellence in media and public relations campaigns.

Run by the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) of Washington, D.C., the website won a silver award in the “Best Use of Internet — Consumer” category. The campaigns were judged by a team of working journalists, who assessed them based on their ability to “achieve extraordinary visibility and influence opinion, as well as on their creativity, command of media and technology and tenacity.”

Originally introduced in 2009 and re-launched in 2010, HowMuchFish.com is online seafood calculator designed to allow consumers to weigh health benefits associated with eating seafood against the risks and to decipher conflicting information about seafood and health, particularly the risks tied to the neurotoxin methylmercury.

The calculator allows consumers to register their weight, how much fish they eat in a single serving and a type of seafood. The website features 25 seafood species, representing 98 percent of the seafood Americans consume, including tuna, swordfish, farmed and wild salmon, tilapia and shrimp.

The industry-funded CCF also runs MercuryFacts.org, which puts the health risks associated with mercury in perspective.
