A salmon retailer in Guangzhou has received a ‘Fangxin Xiaofei Dian’ (it translates as ‘Rest Assured Consumer Shop’ or ‘Don’t Worry Consumer Shop’) award from a local Guangzhou Consumer Committee and the local Commerce Bureau. The brass-colored wall plates are distributed to retailers in the city who meet local government requirements on hygiene and quality of their produce.
Guangzhou Jun Hui Export-Import Co. (also known as Guangzhou Convergency Trade Co.) sells salmon products imported from Norway out of its “Xin Bao Norway Salmon” store on Huang Sha Street in Guangzhou, a sprawling city 90 minutes by train from Hong Kong. The firm has expanded to 10 stores across southern China, with shops in Guangzhou and as far inland as Changsha, the populous capital of Hunan province. The firm plans to open more retail outlets across China.
Wall plates and commendations from various local and national government organizations are a familiar sight inside retail restaurants, retail outlets and businesses in China. However, the appearance of seafood-related commendations is something new to the country, and a good indication of how big an issue “safe and clean” seafood is to Chinese consumers.
