Online retailer gears up to sell seafood in Britain

Online shoppers in the United Kingdom could be having their seafood delivered to their homes by Amazon as soon as September.

Plans for the launch of Amazon Fresh into the U.K. market are at an advanced stage, reports The Times with London widely tipped to be the first city in the country for the service’s roll-out in less than three months time.

Upon entering the market, Amazon Fresh will go head to head with several established online grocery delivery businesses, including those run by Ocado, Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

The United Kingdom’s grocery market has an estimated value of GBP 149 billion (EUR 212 billion; USD 231.8 billion). Online shopping currently accounts for approximately 5 percent of the market, up from 3.4 percent in 2013, and is forecast to grow to be worth more than GBP 11 billion (EUR 15.6 billion; USD 17.1 billion) by 2017.

All the major online grocers have assembled large offerings of fresh, frozen and ambient seafood products.

Amazon Fresh is currently only available in a few U.S. locations such as New York, Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
