First fish finger sandwich award winners crowned

The United Kingdom’s inaugural Fish Finger Sandwich Awards crowned its first champions with Gabrielle Sander from Enfield, London, and Chris Lanyon of Chapel Café, Cornwall, scooping the Public and Professional categories respectively.

The competition was organized by Birds Eye and the winners were chosen in a live cook-off final in London.

Sander’s winning fish finger sandwich comprised mayonnaise, smoked paprika, capers, lime juice, wasabi and rocket, while Lanyon presented a fresh Cornish hake fillet coated in panko breadcrumbs, sandwiched between two pieces of locally made multi-seed bread and homemade tartare sauce.

Birds Eye Head Chef, Peter Lack, said, “The response we’ve received since the launch of the awards in November last year has been fantastic, with hundreds of people submitting their take on the fish finger sarnie. It was a tough decision, but Chris and Gabrielle really stood out in the cook off, with their innovative use of ingredients and stunning presentation, leaving myself and the other judges wanting more.”

The winners will see their winning recipes featured on select Birds Eye Fish Finger packs. In addition, Sander will receive one year’s supply of fish fingers, while Chapel Café’s freezers will be stocked with 24 foodservice packs.
