Retailers promoting seafood specials for New Year’s holiday

Grocery stores and fish markets in the United States are promoting fresh crab, shrimp and other seafood for entertaining on New Year’s Eve.

At the 177-store The Fresh Market chain in Greensboro, North Carolina, jumbo shrimp cocktail 26/30s are on special for USD 12.99 (EUR 12.40) per pound, and 5-ounce North Atlantic lobster tails are going for USD 8.99 (EUR 8.58) each, from 28 December through 3 January.

Similarly, Schenectady, New York-based Price Chopper, which operates 134 stores, is running cooked shrimp 26/30s on special for USD 10.98 (EUR 10.49) per pound, rock lobster tails for USD 9.99 (EUR 9.54) per pound and snow crab clusters for USD 9.99 (EUR 9.54) per pound.

Anchorage, Alaska-based 10th & M Seafoods is featuring live oysters from various Alaska locations for USD 14.95 (EUR 14.28) per dozen and live mussels from Kachemak Bay at USD 6.95 (EUR 6.64) per pound, among other fish and shellfish specials.

"These fresh items will be here in time to fill the tables of all the New Year's parties," Dannon Southall with 10th & M told Anchorage Daily News. "We also have lots of frozen shrimp, crab claws, as well as sausages to add to the plethora of fresh fish available this week to ring in the New Year."

Wholesaler and retailer Lombardi’s Seafood in Winter Park, Florida is offering a number of different seafood items on special for New Year’s, including wild jumbo shrimp 21/20s for USD 12.98 (EUR 12.40) per pound; jumbo lump crab for USD 30.98 (EUR 29.59) per pound, stuffed clams at USD 7.98 (EUR 7.62) per 12-count package and kippers for USD 5.98 (EUR 5.71) per pound.

Premium shellfish also reins on U.S. restaurant menus for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Devon Seafood + Steaks in Glendale, Wisconsin is offering diners two choices on New Year’s Eve: a one-pound lobster tail or a “surf and turf” dinner featuring a six-ounce filet and eight-ounce lobster tail, along with two seasonal sides, for USD 60 (EUR 57.31).

Jax Fish House in Kansas City, Missouri is offering either a crab quartet or a four-course tasting menu for New Year’s Eve dinner. The crab quartet, priced at USD 75 (EUR 71.65), includes king crab, Dungeness crab, snow crab and three stone crabs from Florida. The tasting menu USD 125, EUR 119.33) starts diners off with crab bisque with uni, followed by Fuji apple and trout roe; pork belly with a satsuma marmalade; seared scallops with a foie torchon, chestnut and leeks; and a chocolate torte with chestnut gelato and browned butter.
