Tesco puts its fishmongers to the test

More than 600 fishmongers from Tesco supermarkets the length and breadth of the country are heading to Grimsby for vital training.

The UK’s No. 1 retailer has hooked up with a shoal of local businesses to enhance the customer service at wet fish counters around Britain, following a successful pilot.

Heading it up is Tesco fish specialist Gary Hooper, who is president of the National Federation of Fishmongers, an organization celebrating its 80th anniversary this year.

Recently elected into his third term in the role, the residential element of the course is held at Humber Seafood Institute on Europarc, and facilitated by Grimsby Institute.

The 26-week term involves two residential visits to the town spanning five days — a boon for the hotel trade — as well as in-store learning and three assessments, leading to a Level Two Diploma in Fish and Shellfish if successful.
