U.S.-based lobster processor Sea Hag Seafood took the national spotlight with a small business innovation award this week.

Kyle Murdock, the company's founder and owner, has received the 2013 Yoshiyama Young Entrepreneurs award for small business innovation at his company, which operates from St. George, Maine.

The award is produced annually by the nonprofit Hitachi Foundation, which works to promote the integration of, according to its website, "business actions and societal well-being." The national award includes a USD 40,000 grant and access to the foundation's peer advisory network, along with the foundation's partner organizations Investors' Circle and B Lab.

"I commend Mr. Murdock for bringing much-needed jobs to a community in need, especially since he has done so in a way that promotes sustainability of the fishery," said Maine Governor Paul LePage. "I congratulate him for receiving this tremendous recognition and thank him and his employees for the outstanding contributions they make each day to Maine and its economy."

Murdock started the company in 2008, at age 21, after the lobster price crash. Jaimie Logan, the governor's account executive who worked with Murdock, also praised his accomplishments.

"What Kyle's achieved with Sea Hag Seafood is really a testament to will power," Logan said. "He went far out of his way to envision, create, establish and sustain a company that can thrive in an increasingly competitive business environment — which is one he's had to adapt to as it changed."
