New Marine Harvest value-added salmon plant on track for summer 2017 completion

Marine Harvest Canada (MHC) broke ground as of 15 February on a new value-added processing facility aimed at providing more healthy and convenient salmon products to consumers in and around British Columbia.

The plant, which is located in South Surrey, British Columbia, is expected to open and begin operating in July 2017, said the company. Approximately 12,000 metric tons of salmon will be processed through the plant annually; the facility will serve customers in Western Canada and in the Northwest United States.

“We see an increasing demand in the North American market for healthy, tasty and convenient food,” said Vincent Erenst, Managing Director at MHC. “With the new plant we can provide customers with delicious and easy-to-prepare meal options made from high quality and fresh salmon.”

Marine Harvest operates two other facilities in the province – one in Port Hardy and the other in Klemtu. The new plant will add 75 new full-time jobs to MHC’s current regional workforce of 530.

“It is very exciting to start value-added production in B.C. This will bring value to the company, our customers and the local community. We will provide our customers with excellent products and also bring new jobs to South Surrey,” concluded Stephen Hall, processing director at MHC.

Marine Harvest Canada is headquartered in Campbell River, British Columbia, and supplies salmon products under the premium Sterling brand.
