Trident Seafoods lead customer for NewCold's cutting-edge cold storage facility

Ground has been broken on a site near the Port of Tacoma in Washington, U.S.A., which will accommodate the development of Norwegian cold chain logistics service provider NewCold’s new Tacoma Automated Coldstore.

The facility, being developed for NewCold by Fisher Construction Group, will employ state-of-the-art technology, including automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS), to maintain and stock the high-bay warehouse. The processes to be put to use in the coldstore will be sustainable, traceable and fully-integrated with the strategies of NewCold’s customers, said the company in a release. The warehouse freezer will be one of the largest in the United States, with a storage capacity of over 25 million cubic feet, which is near to the volume of Seahawks CenturyLink Field.

NewCold customers in the area, such as sponsoring customer Trident Seafoods, will be able to customize the multi-customer coldstore to suit the company’s particular needs when it comes to cold chain management, and will be able to contact customer service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making both international and domestic requests easy to place and fulfill.

“With this ground-breaking, NewCold brings to Tacoma, the Pacific Northwest, and North America, 16 years of leadership in automated cold storage development and operations,” said David Richardson, President and CEO of NewCold, in a press release. “Although our roots are in Europe, our heart is with global food producers where ever NewCold can bring value. We could not be more pleased than to stand as partners beside Fisher Construction Company and our sponsoring customer, Trident Seafoods. NewCold highly values trusted partnerships and the partnerships created to realize this efficient, giant freezer are very special. Our sincere thanks to the City of Tacoma for their critical support and guidance. Pierce county and the City of Tacoma are full partners, as well. They are easy to work with and clearly focused on economic growth through leading technologies and we are thrilled to be investing here.”

The warehouse building will come complete with storage racks structured to hold product pallets in a low-oxygen environment, thus reducing the risk of fire from within. What’s more, the entire building will require only half the energy consumed by conventional cold stores to keep the products optimally frozen, the developers said.

“We have been investigating the possibilities of optimizing our cold chain with an automated coldstore for a long time,” added Randy Furtner, CFO of Trident Seafoods. “We went through a rigorous process with NewCold's team to make sure that the coldstore solution fulfills all our needs. NewCold's extensive experience in automated coldstore development and operation have helped us to realize our ambitions. We look forward to working together with NewCold in this generational coldstore project, which will play a pivotal role in our cold chain."

NewCold will employ up to 100 employees in Tacoma when the facility is fully up and running.

“Fisher is excited to partner with NewCold on this facility, their first in North America,” said Dan Powers, President and CEO of Fisher Construction Group. “The unique method used to build this facility, and the technologies incorporated within facility are the way of the future, and we’re pleased to team with them and their storage partners to make it a reality.”
