Vietnam 3Q seafood exports up 12.5%

Vietnam seafood exports reached USD 1.8 billion (EUR 1.3 billion) in the third quarter of 2013, up 12.5 percent compared to the same period last year according to data from the Vietnam Association and Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Total Vietnam seafood exports in first 3 quarters of the year totaled USD 4.7 billion (EUR 3.4 billion), up 4.5 percent from the same period last year. Thanks to the increase in export prices due to low supply in other markets, Vietnam shrimp exports grew 45.5 percent to 65.5 percent in each month of the third quarter, compared to the same period last year.

Whiteleg shrimp holds a increasingly important position, with the export value share rising sharply from 33 percent of total shrimp export value last year to 46.17 percent this year, roughly equivalent to that of black tiger shrimp.

Pangasius exports decreased in the quarter and according to VASEP is not likely to recovery in the coming months due to difficulties in deomstic production

Tuna export value continued also continued a downward trend seen in previous months, expected to be down 5 percent from last year to USD 540 million (EUR 391.7 million) for 2013.
