06 July, 2012 - In what has been described as a “noble” move, one of SA’s leading fishing companies has put its access to lucrative export markets on the line by submitting its catch to stringent international monitoring.

Irvin & Johnson (I&J), part of listed food group AVI, yesterday became the country’s first fishing company to undertake that all its fish produce would be accredited by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) or the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (Sassi), by the year 2015.

This puts increased pressure on Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson to ensure that SA retains the MSC’s accreditation of SA’s deep-sea trawler-caught hake stocks. The accreditation is in jeopardy after Joemat-Pettersson suspended the MSC-required scientific observer program over corruption allegations.

I&J is the largest rights-holder in the hake fisheries.
