12 July, 2012 - High Liner Foods has introduced a line of whole grain seafood products aimed at grammar school students in an effort to enhance healthy meal offerings to meet U.S. Department of Agriculture nutritional standards.

The new products include High Liner brand USDA Commodity Alaska Pollock and Viking brand Alaska Pollock, both available in whole grain breaded nuggets, sticks and fish-shaped nuggets in 1-ounce and 3.6-ounce portions.

In January, the USDA unveiled the new school meal nutrition standards based on the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2012. The standards will be phased in beginning in the 2012-13 school year. Among the requirements are a significant increase in whole grain food offerings and changes to portion sizes based on the age of school children.

“According to the USDA, a diet rich in whole grains can help achieve weight loss and reduce the risk of some chronic diseases,” said Jim LaBelle, High Liner’s VP of foodservice marketing. “High Liner’s new whole grain-rich offerings will make it easier for school districts to serve delicious and healthy seafood offerings that students will love.”

The Canadian company will showcase the products for the first time at the School Nutrition Association Annual National Conference in Denver next week.
