EU, Mauritania set fisheries agreement

26 July, 2012 - The European Union on Thursday reached a new two-year fisheries agreement with Mauritania.

As part of the deal, the EU will pay the West African nation a total of EUR 70 million in exchange for fishing opportunities for shrimp, tuna and pelagic fish.

Additionally, there will be a “very substantial” increase of vessel owners’ fees, in line with the principles of Common Fisheries Policy reform.

“After a very long negotiation process, we have a deal. This deal is sustainable, ethical and good value for money. We have secured a legal framework which will allow EU fishing activities to continue in Mauritanian waters,” said EU Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki in a statement.
