06 August, 2012 - State officials have welcomed the news that lobster industry officials in New Brunswick have agreed to set a minimum price for Canadian lobsters, and to work for additional compensation for lobstermen hurt by low prices and imports from Maine. The agreement calls for a minimum of $2.50 per pound for processed lobster and $3 per pound for live market lobsters.

"I just got off the phone with the fisheries minister in New Brunswick they had very long conversations today with fishermen and processors," said Patrick Keliher, commissioner at the Maine Department of Marine Resources. "They are working to finalize that agreement on price and we're very optimistic that the shipment of Maine lobsters will start to be received early next week." He spoke to MPBN a short while ago."

This follows two days of protests in New Brunswick, during which hundreds of lobstermen blockaded a number of fish processing plants in the Canadian province, at one point forcing a truck loaded with Maine lobster to turn back to the US border.
