02 October, 2012 - The New Zealand Seafood Industry Council has announced a new national industry organization to front its activities, Seafood New Zealand.

SeaFIC will continue as the holding company but Seafood New Zealand will take over its operational roles and have its own chairman and board.

Announcing this yesterday, the start of the new fishing year, SeaFIC chairman Dave Sharp said the new entity was the outcome of a comprehensive review in consultation with industry participants.

It would represent the whole of the seafood industry but allow for greater autonomy of individual sector groups through “sector representative entities.”

These are aquaculture, deepwater, paua, rock lobster and an emerging inshore finfish sector.

Sources have told the Nelson Mail that SeaFIC has struggled to provide satisfactory representation for an increasingly diversified and sometimes conflicted industry, with the new structure providing for each sector to do more for itself.
