Phillips Foods has launched four varieties of albacore tuna to its foodservice offerings.
The tuna is sourced in Samoa and is supported by Phillips’ sustainability program. Samoa is a member of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, which oversees the conservation and management of regional tuna fisheries by restricting the number of tuna boats and working to reduce bycatch. Phillips will work closely with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), Samoan producers and the Samoan government to improve the fishery and ensure its long-term sustainability.
The tuna is available in 4-, 6- and 8-ounce portions as well as chopped and poki cubes.
Tuna is a new addition to Philips' new sustainable fisheries FIP (fishery improvement program) program. Phillips provides funds to SFP in support of their global fisheries improvement work. The goal is to achieve sustainability in all seafood sources that includes smart management of the fishery and concern for the fishing communities that depend on these resources.
For each pound of Phillips Tuna purchased, Phillips will donate 3 cents to SFP for these initiatives. “SFP applauds Phillips Foods initiative in taking the lead in seeking to improve this fishery. It is vitally important that companies such as Phillips engage proactively in improving fisheries they source from,” stated Howard Johnson, SFP director of global communications.
“This is a small, managed fishery with good reporting in place and a very cooperative fisheries department: all positive signs for a sustainable future,” said Ed Rhodes, Phillips’ VP of sustainability.
