05 February, 2013 - With Chinese New Year upon us, seafood companies and restaurants that serve Chinese consumers can expect a surge in business.

This doesn’t come as a surprise to us here at SeafoodSource. In an exclusive survey of Chinese consumers we conducted in 2012, a majority of those surveyed bought salmon at least three times in February, March and April, the period following the New Year celebration.

In truth, the Chinese have a year-round interest in seafood that appears to be growing. Data from the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) shows that as recently as 2009, China consumed a full third of all the global seafood eaten that year, and in 2011, the country became the third-largest seafood importer, according to the FAO.

Trying to decide what kind of seafood people want, however, and whether it should be fresh, frozen, available for cooking at home or available in restaurants, can be a daunting task. Our survey helps answer all of those questions and more.
