India: Aquaculture to make up for drop in catch

08 February, 2013 - The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and the Fisheries Departments of States should act in tandem to promote aquaculture in the country. Aquaculture holds immense promise and potential to improve the lot of farmers as well as to contribute to national growth, according to D. Purandeswari, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry.

She was speaking here on Friday at Andhra Loyola College after inaugurating the three-day Aqua Aquaria India 2013 expo organized by the MPEDA.

She said aquaculture accounted for 1.5 percent of the GDP at present but the importance of the sector was not generally being realized.

As the marine catches were declining, the importance of capture fisheries was being reduced and therefore the aquaculture should fill in the gap. The MPEDA, though primarily an export promotion agency, was also developing sustainable technologies for aquaculture and the State fisheries departments should take up the extension work and take them to the farmers. Only then export earnings could be enhanced and the return to the farmers could also be improved, the minister added.
